THE WAY OF THE SOLDIER
It is the way of the Soldier, They leave you to fight and die in the hopes that those he left behind will be safer than if he has stayed home. Some fight for their Flag, some fight for a cause they believe is just, some fight for their leaders in the hope that the reason the are sent to fight is valid and that they and the others who stand with them are fighting and dying so that you will not have to fight them on our shores and then there are those few who fight and die because that is their life, their chosen path to follow. Those are the "Lifers" – those who spend their life in the Armed Forces of their country.
They come in all shapes, all sizes, all colors and all creeds and they are in every service that their country has but the one thing they have in common is that they are Professional Soldiers, they will lead the young Soldiers into battle and by their experiences in combat over the course of the years will keep more of their Soldiers alive to return home.
There is nothing glorious about war, not now and not ever, but if called most of us will answer, that is the way, that is the way it has been and will always be so. Some will die, some will come home wounded and maimed, and some will come home wounded in their spirit: wounded so badly that they may never recover. Some, like the Professional Soldier, will come home and start preparing for their next war. It is the way; it is why they are here.
